Evidence Based Practices to support instruction for individuals with autism spectrum disorder

Antecedent Based Interventions

  • Social Understanding Interventions

Social stories explain what behavior(s) is expected in a situation and how to respond in a socially expected way. Social stories help individuals understand the perspective of others along with how one individuals behavior may affect the perspective of another person.

  • Token Economy

Individuals with autism are often not socially reinforced due to a deficit in perspective taking. Pairing delivery of a token with social praise while teaching the value of engaging with people will reinforce demonstration of expected behavior.

  • Instructional Accommodations

Individuals with autism may need accommodations and/or modifications to the general education curriculum to better understand the concepts being targeted for instruction in the classroom.
